gathered: A Collective of Cloth and Story – Sept 19 ART SHOW

Art Shows

Braid Studios is proud to present Gathered: A Collective of Cloth and Story, an immersive textile exhibition that invites visitors to step into a world where cloth becomes both canvas and narrator. Running from September 19 to December 5, 2025 at The Braid Loft (321 Sixth Street, New Westminster), this extraordinary show weaves together the work of five visionary artists whose practices explore memory, material, and transformation.

The exhibition opens with a special reception on Friday, September 19, from 6:30–9:00 PM, where guests can meet the artists, experience interactive installations, and celebrate the power of fabric as a vessel for story.

The Artists & Their Works

  • Alice Clair (@aliceclair) explores nostalgia, domesticity, and memory through her oil and acrylic gouache paintings of vintage linens and thrifted textiles. Her installation Alterations features a clothesline of secondhand garments visited by delicate tissue-paper butterflies—a meditation on change, care, and continuity.

  • Daphne Woo of Amacata Design Concepts (@amacatamoon) works with natural dyes and fibres to explore ancestral connections. Her installation Gathered Space transforms part of the studio into a sanctuary draped in textiles, lights, and sound—an environment for pause, reflection, and community.

  • Monica Moscoso (@momodead / @catandsheep.dolls) brings playfulness and nostalgia to life with handmade dolls and embroidered vignettes, evoking circus-like imagination and wonder.

  • Jennie Johnston (@jenniejohnstonart) and Marcie Rohr (@marcierohr) stitch together mixed-media works that layer depth, emotion, and contrast—highlighting the many ways cloth can carry and communicate story.

Together, these artists transform The Braid Loft into an immersive experience. From projection, scent, and sound to sculptural textile environments, Gathered invites visitors to slow down and consider the stories woven into every thread.

Many of you knew Carla Thompson. Carla had a rema Many of you knew Carla Thompson.

Carla had a remarkable gift for helping people feel seen, supported, and capable. Whether she was teaching a new skill, helping someone untangle their finances, offering accountability through body doubling, or quietly working behind the scenes to make things run smoothly, she brought kindness and patience to everything she did.

You may have known Carla through Braid Studios, the Decide Your Life Community with @georgeelow , her Holistic Bookkeeper business, her work with the Dot community or her Books & Brew sessions.

Carla first came to Braid Studios as a crochet instructor, but over the years she became so much more than a teacher. She served as our Paint Night Manager, Wedding & Events Manager, administrator, bookkeeper, trusted advisor, and dear friend. Even after moving to Vancouver Island during Covid, Carla remained an important part of the Braid community. For me, as owner of Braid, Carla was my right-hand person and one of my closest friends. For many others, she was a mentor, cheerleader, problem solver, and steady source of support.

Her impact reached far beyond any one business or community and the kindness she brought to each of them was always the same.

On June 27, I want to invite friends, family, artists, colleagues, clients, students, and community members to join us as we share stories and memories of this beautiful woman who touched so many lives. ~ Susan

A doll created especially for a woman who embraces Mexican culture as her own. Her home and her memories are filled with afternoons wandering the streets of Oaxaca.

Getting to know her is a true pleasure, and creating a doll inspired by her has been a great honor.
