A Creative Community for Working Artists
Braid Studios provides professional working studio spaces for artists who want more than just four walls. Our studios are designed for artists who value community, mentorship, and opportunities to grow their creative practice.
Founded by artist Susan L. Greig, Braid Studios has grown into one of the largest independent artist studio communities outside Vancouver. Today the studios are home to more than 30 artists working across a wide range of disciplines including painting, textiles, sculpture, illustration, photography, and mixed media.
Artists join Braid not only for the space, but for the opportunity to work within an active and supportive creative environment.
Braid Studios offers more than studio space — it provides community, mentorship, and professional resources designed to support artists at every stage of their practice.
Professional Artist Listing & Promotion
Each resident artist receives a listing on the Braid Studios website with links to their website and social media. When a new artist joins the studios, we generally introduce them publicly through our social media channels. Our goal is to amplify the work happening within the studios and help artists reach wider audiences.
Resident artists who share their work and activities regularly on social media, even things happening outside of the studio, will receive some promotion.
Mentorship & Career Support
Artists at Braid Studios have access to mentorship with Susan L. Greig, founder of Braid Studios and a working artist with over a decade of experience building creative communities.
- Mentorship may include guidance on:
- Business and career planning
- Pricing artwork and developing sustainable income streams
- Preparing for exhibitions and open studio events
- Participating in the New Westminster Cultural Crawl
- Portfolio development and goal setting
Many artists join Braid not only for the studio space, but for the opportunity to grow their practice within a knowledgeable and supportive environment.
Artist Discounts & Industry Connections
Because of the size of the Braid Studios community, we are able to work with suppliers and service providers to secure discounts and professional services that individual artists may not normally have access to.
These include:
- Discounted professional canvases delivered directly to the studio
- Preferred pricing on art materials and supplies (in development) with major suppliers such as Winsor & Newton and Liquitex and Royal Talens
- Referrals to trusted photographers, printers, website builders, graphic designers, and other creative professionals
We only recommend businesses we have worked with and trust-people who have consistently supported our artists and our community.
Community & Studio Gatherings
Braid Studios is home to a diverse group of artists working in many disciplines. Throughout the year, the entire studio community gathers for potluck breakfasts and open studio events, creating opportunities for artists to connect, share ideas, and support one another.
These gatherings are often where collaborations, exhibitions, and creative partnerships begin.
Workshop & Event Space Access
Resident artists receive discounted access to Braid Studios workshop and event spaces. These spaces can be used for:
- Teaching workshops
- Hosting artist talks
- Small exhibitions or launches
- Creative gatherings and demonstrations
These spaces allow artists to expand their practice beyond the studio walls.

A LITTLE BIT ABOUT US
Braid St Studios started out in 2014 at the 100 Braid St building location in a heritage industrial building with 16 art studios. We expanded in 2018 to become the largest working art studio outside of Vancouver with 46 art studios and a gallery/event space. A key feature of all of our spaces is an open plan concept or studios with windows that allows visitors to be inspired and to learn from the artists practicing in the studio.
We are a non-traditional gallery/studio business model and serve as an incubator for emerging and professional artists. Mentorship by owner/founder Susan L. Greig and art industry professionals has also been a hallmark of Braid St so in 2022 the Braid St Online platform was launched. This is a way to keep all aritsts, regardless of location connected and able to learn from & support each other.
We have always had a variety of artists who work in all kinds of mediums:
oils, textiles, acrylics, alcohol inks, watercolour, jewelry, glitch, photography, graphic design, illustration, puppets, jewelry, carved wood, resin, doll making, installation art, collage, etc. Musicians, musical groups, writers, performance artists and poets have also been integral members of our community and events such as Open Mic Nights.
